Tripped RCD or breaker
The most common cause. A fault on one circuit trips the RCD protecting a whole group of circuits, so half the house goes off.

Lost power to the whole property or just part of it? We help you work out whether it is a network fault or your own installation, then come out day or night to restore it safely.
Power cuts and power loss
If your neighbours and the street lights are also off, the problem is on the local network and needs reporting to the network operator by calling 105. If it is only your property, or only some of your circuits, the fault is usually inside your installation, and that is where we come in.
We check your meter tails, main switch, consumer unit and circuits to find why the power has gone, whether that is a burnt main connection, a tripped or damaged RCD, a loose neutral or a fault on a single circuit. We restore what is safe straight away and explain anything that needs further work.

Common causes
We test properly to find the real cause, so the problem is fixed rather than patched.
The most common cause. A fault on one circuit trips the RCD protecting a whole group of circuits, so half the house goes off.
A loose connection at the main switch, meter tails or a circuit can overheat and fail, cutting the supply. These need urgent attention.
Main switches and isolators can wear out or burn internally, leaving you with no power even though nothing has tripped.
Damaged cables, failed junction boxes or rodent damage can take out a lighting or socket circuit completely.
If you have a prepayment meter, check your credit and emergency credit first. We can tell you if the meter itself looks faulty.
A problem on the incoming supply belongs to the network operator. We can confirm it with testing and tell you who to call.
Before we arrive
What to do right now about power cuts and loss of power, while a qualified electrician is on the way to you.
Look at the street lights and next door. If they are off too, call 105 to report a power cut to the network operator.
Check for a switch in the down position. Try resetting it once with the appliances on that circuit unplugged.
If you have a prepayment meter, check your credit and any emergency credit before calling.
Turn off cookers, heaters and irons so nothing comes back on unattended when the power returns.
If there is a burning smell, crackling or heat from the meter or fuse box, keep clear and call us straight away.
If your neighbours have power and resetting does not help, call us and we will find the fault.

Warning signs
A burnt main connection can cut your power and create a fire risk at the same time. Do not touch it, keep everyone away and call us straight away.

Common questions about power cuts and loss of power. Still unsure? Call us and a qualified electrician will talk it through.
If your neighbours and the street lights are off too, it is almost certainly a network fault: call 105 to report it. If only your property, or only part of it, is affected, the fault is likely in your installation and an electrician should check it.
105 is the free UK number for reporting power cuts. It puts you through to your local electricity network operator, who look after the cables and supply up to your meter.
Most homes split their circuits between two RCDs. A fault on one circuit can trip the RCD that protects several circuits, so half the house goes off. Unplug appliances and try resetting; if it trips again, call us.
It can be. Dimming, flickering or a burning smell before a power loss can point to a loose or overheating connection. Switch off if it is safe and call an electrician.
Tell us when you call if anyone in the property relies on medical equipment, is elderly or has young children, and we will do our best to get to you first. You can also join your network operator's free Priority Services Register.
