Loose wiring
Connections inside the back box work loose over time. Current arcs across the gap, causing sparks, heat and scorching.

A tiny spark as you plug in can be normal, but big sparks, crackling, scorch marks or a hot socket are not. Stop using it and call us. We come out day or night to make it safe.
Sparking sockets and switches
A brief, tiny spark as you plug in or switch off an appliance can happen as current starts or stops flowing. A spark that is large, loud or keeps happening, or comes with a pop, a smell or black marks, is a sign of a fault, and that socket should not be used again until it is checked.
We replace damaged sockets and switches, remake failed connections and test the circuit behind them to make sure the problem has not spread. Where fittings are old or not up to the job, we suggest a suitable replacement and explain why.

Common causes
We test properly to find the real cause, so the problem is fixed rather than patched.
Connections inside the back box work loose over time. Current arcs across the gap, causing sparks, heat and scorching.
Contacts inside older sockets and switches wear out, so plugs no longer grip firmly and arcing starts.
Plugging high-power appliances into adaptors or extension leads pushes too much current through one socket.
Moisture in a socket, especially in kitchens, bathrooms or outside, can cause tracking and sparking.
A bent pin, cracked plug or loose connection inside the plug can spark in a perfectly good socket. We check both.
Wrong cable sizes, poor terminations or unsuitable fittings from earlier DIY are a common cause we find.
Before we arrive
What to do right now about sparking sockets and switches, while a qualified electrician is on the way to you.
Do not plug anything back into a socket that has sparked badly, crackled or scorched.
If the plug is still in, switch off the socket, or the circuit at the consumer unit, before removing it.
If the socket or plug is hot, melted or smoking, switch off at the main switch if safe and keep clear.
Move essential appliances to a different circuit, and avoid overloading adaptors and extension leads.
Damaged sockets can expose live parts. Keep everyone away from the fitting until it is repaired.
Tell us what happened and what was plugged in. We will make it safe and repair it properly.

Warning signs
That means the socket or plug has been overheating and arcing. Switch off, leave it unplugged and call us. We will replace what is damaged and check the circuit behind it.

Tell us which socket or switch and what happened. We agree a price first.
The circuit is safely isolated and the fitting and its connections inspected.
Damaged fittings, connections and cable are replaced with quality parts.
The circuit is tested and certified, so you know it is safe to use again.

Common questions about sparking sockets and switches. Still unsure? Call us and a qualified electrician will talk it through.
A tiny, brief spark when plugging in or switching off can be normal. Large, loud or repeated sparks, crackling, smells or scorch marks are not, and the socket should be checked.
Yes. Arcing creates intense heat that can melt the fitting and ignite nearby materials. Stop using it and get it checked as soon as possible.
Switch off the socket if it is safe to touch the switch. If it is hot, scorched or still sparking, switch off that circuit or the main switch at the consumer unit.
It can be either. We test the socket and its wiring and, if needed, the plug and appliance lead to find where the fault really is.
In most cases, yes. We carry common sockets and switches in the van and can usually replace them on the first visit.
